Browsing Bohol VI: Baclayon

 In Bohol, The Philippines

One of the most visited places in Bohol is the oldest church we have. That church is located in Baclayon, a town right after Tagbilaran City going to the east. To get to Baclayon, there are a lot of ways to do that, either hailing a taxi or getting into the bus, cab, jeepney, trike or even thru a motorcycle for a reasonable price. The Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception is just 45 minutes trip from the city centre. This church has been established for more than 400 years. It has been standing for 4 centuries and still has been preserved by the missionaries. When you come to visit the church, there is also a small museum with antiquities, relics that dated back 16th century and a convent. In the museum, you are not allowed to take photos and getting around the church would take an hour and a half. When you get out of the church, there is this famous location for locals and that is the Baluarte. If you have heard about the engagement of Cesar Montano and Sunshine Cruz  who are famous Filipino celebrities, it was held in Baluarte. The locals just love to dip and dive in the clear waters of Baluarte.
There are also other tourist destinations in Baclayon but it involves spending a fortune. The luxurious and so popular resort, Peacock Garden which is in Upper Laya. It is a resort inspired in European style. But so far, I haven’t gone there yet.

Due to the earthquake which struck Bohol last October 15, 2013, the iconic church of Baclayon was destroyed and lost its façade and belfry. It is still under reconstruction with the help of NGOs, donations from kind people all over the world, and funding of National Cultural Heritage Act.
